Matthew Raw

Matthew Raw is an artist who uses clay to explore community, language and social history. With a particular focus on ceramic tiles and often involving social making, Matthew seeks to push the possibilities of the material to communicate and challenge public perceptions of what it can do.

He has shown and installed work across the UK, in the USA and throughout Europe, including two Arts Council England funded solo exhibitions. Raw’s practice exists between galleries, museums, the public realm, residencies and education establishments. He is a founding member of Studio Manifold (est. 2010) in East London, and a visiting lecturer at The Royal College of Art and Central St Martins.

Matthew is a Jerwood Makers Award winner, former maker in residence at the V&A Museum, and his ‘Clay Station’ – a collaboration with Assemble, commissioned by Art on the Underground – is at Seven Sisters Station, London. Current projects include large tiled murals for The University of Warwick and East Street Arts in Leeds, and a range of tiled furniture for The New Craftsmen.

Raw is based between his studios in Paris and London.

"This is completely new for me: taking a texture that I’ve been working with and thinking about how to use it functionally and how to interpret it on a smaller scale.”
